At Valley Community Church we take the words of Jesus literally when he says, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). As Christ followers, we believe the only appropriate response to God’s grace is to give. In 2 Corinthians chapter 8 we see a beautiful response to the grace of God in the lives of the Macedonian believers. Because of the grace of God given to them in the gospel of Jesus Christ, they gave with joy in the midst of affliction from their poverty beyond their means. We as Christians can learn much from this, not that we should all give beyond our means, but that we would see giving as a joyful effort and a response to the good news of Jesus Christ.
We give so that more people can hear of the good news that is found in the person and work of Jesus Christ. We give so that our church can continue to be a witness of this truth. We give because we realize that all of our resources are a gift of the Lord’s to begin with, therefore it brings us joy to give to the One who is worthy. We give because we have been given so much, we have been given eternal life, we have been given the forgiveness of sins, and we have been given the righteousness of Christ. It is a joy to give with this in mind!
